Trevecca reopens historic McClurkan Building after $4 million renovation
Nashville, Tennessee
Trevecca Nazarene University's iconic McClurkan Building is now back in use following its complete renovation. Last summer the university began the $4 million project, which required removing all interior walls down to the studs.
Constructed in 1943, the McClurkan Building included an auditorium, classrooms, and faculty offices; at one time it also housed the school’s post office and library. The limestone for the exterior walls was quarried by students during World War II and the American chestnut beams used for the building came from land in Kentucky owned by A. B. Mackey, Trevecca’s longest serving president.
For more than half of Trevecca’s history, daily chapel services were held in the auditorium. In more recent years, one floor of the building was home to the Millard Reed School of Theology.
The renovated McClurkan now houses the Millard Reed School of Theology in an attractive new office suite on the third floor. The Benson Auditorium as been redesigned with improvements for theatre productions, which are held there. Additionally, the building has a new lobby and seven classrooms, is ADA compliant, has new entrances on each end, and has a new parking area.
McClurkan is the backdrop for Trevecca’s commencement each year, and this renovation means that the 7,000 persons expected to attend the May 5 ceremonies will have a much more attractive view.
