A Spanish-Speaking Pastors Conference, held July 24-27 at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU), brought together 143 total participants from 9 different districts in the western U.S.

According to Ron Fay, director of church relations for the Center for Pastoral Leadership, the response to the conference has been overwhelmingly positive.

"My family and I and enjoyed the conference and the fellowship with very dear people," said Caleb Herrera, a pastor from Texas and one of the conference speakers.

"I must commend the way the university is behind the Spanish work in your area. I had the opportunity to talk to many pastors and all of them shared how Point Loma is behind them in their ministry."

The primary purpose of the conference, which takes place every three years, is to provide assistance for training and inspiration for Spanish-speaking pastors. This year's conference theme was "Perspectives of Contemporary Holiness." Class sessions were taught in Spanish and led by retired Nazarene Theological Seminary (NTS) professor Paul Bassett and current NTS professor Roger Hahn. Additionally, PLNU professor Steve Rodeheaver taught a class on translating Scripture.

Additional conference topics included computer education and reaching second generation Latinos. Classes were offered on Power Point and general computer use as supplemental tools to use in sermons by former missionary to Guatemala Kelvin St. John.

Plans are already in the works for the conference in 2009.
