Northern Benin
When JESUS Film equipment was delivered to Nazarene leaders in northern Benin this past June, they promised the Gospel would reach all of the villages in the area.

“In listening to [the leaders],” stated District Superintendent Moise Toumoudagou, “I thought they were only talking about practitioners of traditional religions, as they are usually the only ones really open to the Gospel. Conversion of people from other religious groups is often due to extraordinary circumstances. However, Pastor Emmanuel Tchati made this statement of faith, ‘God is simply God.’ And God surprised us as each day He allowed us to discover that truth—the very expression of His grace.”

After planting churches in most of the villages of their area, Pastor Norbert, the zone coordinator, and his assistant Emmanuel, began to explore the areas recognized as being bastions of other religious groups.

Since the Beninese independence in 1960, no evangelical churches have successfully reached this area. According to Toumoudagou, “That all changed on July 28, 2007 when Jesus chose to change the course of history and transform this area into the glorious image of the Almighty.”

On July 28, Norbert arrived for a JESUS Film showing in Fekierou, a village near Tchahoun-Cossi, Benin where there has been a small group of believers meeting since last year.

During the film, a man named Ibrahim received Jesus. But the local believers were a little discouraged to learn that Ibrahim was just passing through; he actually lived nearby in a village called Koutourkodika.

Three days later the team visited Koutourkodika to show the JESUS Film. Unknown to them, there was a big surprise waiting to happen. After the film and Gospel presentation, an unusually large crowd responded to the invitation. The new church in this village now has many new believers, including 98 who were previously followers of another religious group.

Three days following this event, the JESUS Film team was invited to a neighboring village called Douaka where many individuals accepted Jesus.

The last village to receive the Gospel in this area of Benin is called Tchafoni, located near the border of Togo, Africa. Again, many received the Gospel and, as believers in Christ, began attending the young Nazarene church in that village.

According to Toumoudagou, “The most recent news is that these new believers are crossing the border into Togo, bringing the Gospel with them. It is a different country, but it is the same people group, same language, and same culture. We are trusting God for the same results.”

Toumoudagou added, “Will all of you reading this incredible testimony of God, please pray. Pray that God will continue to protect His own. Pray for pastors Norbert and Emmanuel that God will use them powerfully in this vast harvest field in northwest Benin. Pray also for the other villages along the border with Togo that similar evangelistic efforts will produce similar results.”
