Horn of Africa Field Strategy Coordinator Howie Shute and District Superintendent Ermias Mekuria finished a tour of Northern and Western Ethiopia with an experience they will not soon forget.

The two were driving from a leadership meeting in Metu, Ethiopia, to another leadership meeting and district assembly in Mizan, Ethiopia on Friday, January 25, accompanied by three Ethiopian pastors.

At approximately 2 P.M., their vehicle veered off the road, hitting an electric pole head on. The pole was snapped in half just before their vehicle lunged over a steep ravine. The vehicle finally came to a jarring stop after rolling over and over again for a distance of approximately 240 yards.

The vehicle was totally destroyed.

All five passengers not only escaped death, but did not incur serious injury. The police investigators, insurance company, and all the curious villagers were amazed that anyone lived through the crash.

"The Lord seemed to confirm what everyone was thinking—that He was in control—by painting a full rainbow in the sky immediately after the crash on a dry, sunny day," stated Shute.

“The Lord’s hand was on us all and His covenant is still with His people,” he said.
