David Alexander was named Northwest Nazarene University’s (NNU) twelfth president on Saturday, March 8. Alexander will assume leadership following the retirement of President Richard A. Hagood July 31.

Described as a visionary leader, a relational educator, and a committed Christian, Alexander comes to NNU from Southern Nazarene University (SNU) in Bethany, Oklahoma, where he served for 17 years. He is currently the vice president for university advancement, having responsibility for the offices of alumni relations, communications and marketing, development, and admissions. In this role Alexander managed the largest capital campaign in the university’s history. He previously served as chairman of the SNU School of Music.

Alexander is not a stranger to Northwest Nazarene University. From 1986-1991 he served as a faculty member, was actively involved with faculty committees, directed the Northwesterners ensemble, conducted musical productions, and was named “Professor of the Year” by students. Alexander holds a doctorate in music education from the University of Illinois and earned a master of music in choral conducting from California State Fullerton.

“I am pleased with the process and the decision of the Board of Trustees,” states Chair of the NNU Board of Trustees Randy Craker. “Dr. Alexander brings a breadth of educational experience that prepared him well to be our next president. His history with NNU, his experience as a faculty member and administrator, and his Christian character qualify him for this responsibility.

“Dr. Alexander is a strong churchman and understands the vital need of connecting the local church with the university. He will be called on to maintain the university's mission of shaping the hearts and minds of our students to be change-agents in the world. He has a clear understanding of the Wesleyan theology and an ability to articulate it well,” Craker continued.

Regarding the importance of the university community, Alexander stated, “The success of the university is best accomplished as a collective community of faith. The board, administration, faculty, staff, and students of Northwest Nazarene University’s community gather as covenant partners in disciple-making. Our educational experience occurs not only in the ‘knowing’ of the classroom, but also in the ‘doing’ of co-curricular activities, service, and missions. NNU’s essence is centered in the educational enterprise of making Christ-like disciples in a climate of academic excellence, participating in acts of social responsiveness, and looking to make His Kingdom come through creative engagement.”

In anticipation of the future and NNU’s 2013 Centennial celebration, Alexander said, “The President must keep the spiritual core central, undergird and support what NNU already does well and forecast growing edges of opportunity.”

Alexander and his wife, Sandy (Jillbert), graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 1977. David and Sandy have two adult children: son Matt and his wife Brenda have a daughter Elizabeth; and, their daughter Amy is married to Andy Curry.

When the Alexanders first lived in Nampa, Idaho, David Alexander served on the church board of Nampa’s First Church of the Nazarene and Sandy Alexander taught at Centennial Elementary School. His parents, Dave and Lois Alexander, are NNU alumni.

“Dr. Alexander is an energetic educator; he is enthusiastic about the integration of faith and learning, understanding the importance of what we believe and who we are as a comprehensive university,” concluded Randy Craker.
