Korean Nazarenes rallied at the Yu Kwan Soon Memorial Stadium in Cheonan City, South Korea, on Sunday, November 9, to celebrate two exciting anniversaries: the 60th anniversary of the Church of the Nazarene in Korea, and the 100th anniversary of the denomination.

In October of 1948, at the invitation of Rev. Chung, "Robert" Nam-Soo, General Supertindent Orval J. Nease met with Korean leaders and officially organized the Church of the Nazarene in Korea, making it the 29th country to join this growing international Church.

However, what began in 1948 with a handful of churches has expanded to become the second largest district in the denomination, with nearly 21,000 full members and more than 275 churches. The district has also birthed Korea Nazarene University (KNU), the largest Nazarene University in the world, with approximately 5,500 students.

At the anniversary celebration on November 9, a number of special guest speakers addressed the capacity crowd of more than 7,000. District Superintendent Im, Yong Hwa recognized the faithful labors of the early ministers in the denomination. He expressed the hope that this anniversary would signify a "new start" that would see the planting of more holiness churches in the nation of Korea. KNU President Dr. Im, Seung-An, commended the district for its 60 years of Kingdom expansion.

In his evening message, General Superintendent Emeritus and first Nazarene missionary to Korea Dr. Donald Owens challenged those gathered to see past accomplishments as mile markers on the road to even greater days ahead. He reminded those gathered that Nazarenes are a Christian, a Holiness, and a Missional people. Mr. Sang, Mooo-yong, the honorable mayor of Cheonan City, also joined in adding his congratulations. The evening ended with a stirring performance by KNU's full orchestra and a 300 voice mass choir with members gathered from across the district.

Among the many guests present for the occasion was a delegation from the Japan District, including District Superintendent Rev. Motoko Matsuda. Mrs. Matsuda congratulated District Superintendent Im, Yong Hwa for his leadership and expressed a desire for closer ties between the two nations.

Asia-Pacific Regional Director Verne Ward writes: "Korean Nazarenes have a great opportunity to share Jesus Christ in Korea, in the Asia-Pacific Region, and throughout the world through prayer, through giving, and through the equipping and sending of men and women for missional service. I pray that Korea will be a catalyst for church planting movements amongst the millions of unreached people on this region through the development and deployment of Christlike servant leaders."
