Trevecca Lady Trojans defeat SNU in double overtime to take Music City Classic
Friday, December 5, 2008
Nashville, Tennessee
NAIA No. 4 Trevecca Nazarene University (8-0) hosted the Music City State Farm Classic November 21-22 with the tournament championship game featuring the preseason No. 4 Trojans and the No. 22 Southern Nazarene University (SNU) Crimson Storm (7-1).
Trevecca emerged with a hard-fought 101-95 win in double-overtime.
Trevecca took the early lead, but the Crimson Storm hung around for most of the first half. Trevecca took a pair of seven point leads in the frame, their largest of the game, but SNU used a 5-0 run to close within two at the break, 31-29.
In the second half, the Crimson Storm took control early, eventually building an eight point lead before the Trojans began to cut into the deficit. Jennifer Bognar and the Trojans' post game slowly brought the Trojans back, with Trevecca reclaiming the one point lead late, 65-63 with 6:23 to go. The teams battled on, with Trevecca unable to seal the game at the foul line, and the Crimson Storm forced overtime, tied at 75-75.
In the first overtime period, the Trojans struck first on a free throw by K.C. Van Atta, leading by as many as two in the frame, but SNU came back again. The Crimson Storm reclaimed the lead at 85-83 with under 10 seconds to play. Trevecca's Christian Gibson brought the ball down the floor for the Trojans, and with four seconds remaining, she drew Logan Martin's fifth foul and hit the free throws to send the game into a second overtime.
In the second extra period, SNU struck first, and eventually took a 94-93 lead with just over 90 seconds to play. Trevecca's Casey Atteberry then hit a dagger three point basket - her only points of the night - that gave the Trojans the lead for good. Gibson hit three free throws down the stretch and Bognar sealed the game with a layup with just one second left, providing the final score of 101-95.
