David Middendorf receives NBC Delong Series Excellence in Preaching Award
Friday, May 15, 2009
Colorado Springs, Colorado
David Middendorf of Burlington, North Carolina, has been named this year's recipient of the Excellence in Preaching Award for the Delong Sermon Series, according to an announcement made by Harold B. Graves Jr., president of Nazarene Bible College (NBC).
Middendorf, an online student at NBC since the Spring of 2004, currently serves as the biker pastor at Power Line Church of the Nazarene in Elon, North Carolina. He also leads Uncaged Biker Ministries that helps churches begin non-traditional outreach to bikers, bars, and prisons. Prior to starting Uncaged Ministries, he served as the minister of music at Power Line.
Middendorf anticipates starting and dedicating the Nazarene Motorcycle Fellowship, an international association of Christian bikers winning the lost for Christ, during the General Assembly next month. Prior to entering the ministry, Middendorf worked for a biological supply company.
Students who participate in the annual DeLong Series are nominated by their Christian Preaching II professors and invited to participate by submitting a sermon manuscript. All manuscripts are anonymously evaluated by a committee of the faculty. From those, sermons are chosen to be preached in chapel.
Finalists in the series this year included Middendorf and Jenny Vander Haeghen, a senior student from Orlando, Florida. She will graduate this year and plans to return to Florida to practice disciple-making in a local church setting while developing a ministry plan for helping small churches implement discipleship programs. Prior to studying at NBC she worked as a trainer for banking software companies for 20 years.
The DeLong Sermon Series is made possible through the support of Nazarene Bible College and the generosity of the Russell V. DeLong family in honor of his father, Thomas Walter DeLong. Thomas Walter DeLong was ordained in 1910 by Phineas F. Bresee. He pastored Nazarene churches in New England for many years.
