Reach the lost with GOL 2010

GOL 2010 is a worldwide evangelism strategy of the Church of the Nazarene in conjunction with the World Cup soccer event being hosted in South Africa in June and July 2010. Nazarene churches and districts are invited to host soccer camps in 2009 and 2010 as part of a global outreach effort to share the message of God's love with the lost. This is a collaborative effort between Children's Ministries International (CMI), JESUS Film Harvest Partners, Nazarene Youth International (NYI), and World Mission. CMI and NYI will host kick-off events promoting GOL 2010 at their General Conventions in Orlando, Florida. Both groups will accept offerings to support the strategy of GOL 2010.
Soccer (futbol) is the most popular sport worldwide. The project name "GOL" is a widely understood sports term meaning "to score." The outreach strategy is to reach children, youth, and adults through soccer camps featuring the GOL evangelism soccer ball and the JESUS Film. While the attention of the world is focused on the World Cup, this event will provide the church a great opportunity to tell the story of Christ in a creative outreach setting.
The camp days will consist of soccer activities and evenings will conclude with a JESUS Film showing and an opportunity at the end of the film for those who do not know Jesus to invite Him into their lives. The camp centerpiece will be a multicolored ball. The ball's colors correlate to important aspects in the Gospel story: black - sin/spiritual darkness, red - Christ blood, white - the cleansing power of Christ's blood, gold - God, and green - growth as new believers.
Participants will take home a mini version of the ball in the form of a hacky sack. The GOL is that many will leave the soccer camp as new believers in Christ and with training to use the hacky sack to share Jesus with others. Local churches will provide follow-up.
Resources and equipment for the soccer camps have been assembled. To register a soccer camp, order materials, or make a donation to the project, visit www.GOL2010.org. For resource information and ideas on how to raise money to support GOL 2010, visit Jesus Film Harvest Partners (JFHP) at www.JFHP.org.
Note: For more information on this project, including a Q&A session and audiocasts in English and Spanish, see Engage magazine.
