Ghana New Hope Community Church gives new hope in Christ
Wednesday, September 9, 2009
Ghana, Africa
Alex Akomaning, Ghana Highlands district superintendent and pastor of New Hope Community Church of the Nazarene, shares a recent ministry project the church began in their community:
We are encouraged by Scripture to let our hearts respond with compassion to needs that come to our notice, and to seek for opportunities to help people in our communities. The love of God has been poured out into our hearts. That simply means God has given the church the capacity of love just as He loves. He has imparted to us the grace to do what He commands us to do. Within our hearts there is a rich deposit of the divine love of God. It is not only in God, it is also in us.--NCN News-Africa
In July and August 2009, I was told by my local church that there is a compassionate work for us to do in our community; they meant that after they had built a broken bridge connecting two communities and been involved in feeding the needy ones, they were full of compassion and wanted to do more whenever there was a need. So, they found the ''people's well'', a public well where approximately 150 people get their water. The well was dirty and broken, the walls had changed to a green color, but no one cared.
The Nazarenes saw this and said, "we must do it and save lives, since water is life."
Some of the Nazarenes gathered to wash the well and clean away the green color. They took out all the water, cleaned the dirt and the mud out of the well, and plastered the walls with cement. By doing this, they have changed the lives of the people in the community. This project took us about four hours and cost us about GHC20.00 (less than $0.01 U.S.). Some of the community people came around and said a BIG THANKS to the church.
A minister from the local Methodist Church who came there said, "I have been a minister for a long time but have never ever seen a church who cares like this."
After the work was done, I advised the community that whenever there is a need, they should call all the people within the community and the church will also join hands and help. From New Hope Church, we are giving people new hope in Christ.
