New format for Mission Support magazine
Global Ministry Center

For the past three years, Mission Support USA/Canada has published the MissionStrategy.org quarterly magazine, a resource that provided articles of interest in the areas of compassionate, socio-ethnic, and urban ministry. These contributions were garnered from authors and writers who were experts and general practitioners in their respective fields of practice. The readership has grown to more than 3,000 and requests for the expansion of publication continue unabated.

While the department would like to honor these requests and expectations of constituents, the changing economic and stewardship realities suggest that the adoption of new delivery systems be considered. It has been decided to cease paper production, and as of the March 2010 edition, the magazine will be published digitally at www.missionstrategy.org.

This change has become necessary for various reasons, such as:
  • There are a myriad of ways in which church leaders access and use materials, such as cutting and pasting from sources, including the Internet.
  • Paper production has become increasingly expensive and uneconomical, and electronic media lends itself to a more environmentally friendly presentation.
  • In a progressively more global community, digital communication has become more practical.
  • The time-sensitive electronic format makes it possible to respond more readily to up-to-date news and developing stories such as the events in Haiti and elsewhere in the world.
  • The magazine would be more portable and usable through smart phones and an ever increasing production of new gadgets.
  • In consultation with a newly contracted vendor it is conceivable that constituents could be offered richer media content that will include "hot links" to relevant sites, books, Compassionate Ministry Centers, churches, on-line lectures, and blogs.

"In the midst of these changes, we remain committed to provide articles and material that are relevant, provocative, unique, liberative, sensitive, missional, biblical, and practical to the end user," said Oliver R. Phillips, director of Mission Support USA/Canada. "We also look forward to a new name for the magazine. Stay tuned."
