Statistical Highlights:
Last year...
Every week...
Ten years ago, the Church of the Nazarene's total membership was just over 1.3 million. Now, 10 years later, we are well into the 21st century - the century for which God raised us up. Now, with more than 600,000 new members (half of them were received in the last 3 years), we are poised to cross the 2 million member mark at some point during this calendar year. We celebrate the vitality and strength we enjoy because of the multitude of talents these new Nazarenes bring. The past ten years have seen us grow by 45%. Just imagine what the next ten will bring.
Additional Highlights
2005 Tsunami Update: Kalumnai House Rehabilitation Project
Tholipodi and his wife were married just before the tsunami came. Their house was 100 meters away from the beach, and they lost everything, yet they survived. With the help of Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (NCM) Lanka, in partnership with their community, the couple and their new baby are now moving into their new house.
NCM also recently dedicated 50 homes in Karaitivu and is in process of building another 30 homes in nearby Akkaraipattu. They also hope to provide Child Development programs that include vocational and skills training for the parents.
World Mission Broadcast
World Mission Broadcast in South America has released the third season of Mujer Valiosa TV (The Valued Woman). This television ministry was launched in 2007 after the unprecedented success of Mujer Valiosa radio. Mujer Valiosa radio airs on more than 1,400 stations in 24 countries. Like its predecessor, the television ministry exploded into television markets, now airing on more than 1,000 channels in 20 countries. The potential audience is estimated at more than 150 million viewers each month. These statistics are exciting and clearly show the tremendous impact programs like Mujer Valiosa can have.
Border Initiative
JESUS Film Harvest Partners (JFHP) is working to supply 30 sets of equipment along the border of the United States and Mexico. We are working with leadership to distribute this equipment on both sides of the border, impacting two regions: USA/Canada and Mexico & Central America.
Global Nazarene Publications
A partnership between Global Nazarene Publications (GNP), Children's Ministries International, and Nazarene Publishing House will produce the first-ever simultaneous release of current children's Bible Study and Quizzing materials in English, French, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Children's Ministries International designated the 2009 Vacation Bible School offerings to be used for the translation and cultural adaptation of the quizzing materials for one complete six-year cycle. GNP will secure the necessary translators and administer the joint venture. The materials will be made available to the regions for translation into as many languages as desired.
Youth In Mission
God continues to use Youth In Mission to develop and impact young church leaders. In 2009, Youth In Mission sent 83 participants to 28 world areas. Of this group, 20 of the Youth In Mission students were from outside of the United States and Canada.

Bustle reports:
To describe the size of the Church of the Nazarene, we have often said that the sun never sets on our church. Another way might be to say that the work of the church extends all the way from here to Timbuktu. This year we present to you the opportunity to make those words become literally true, as we recommend the West African country of Mali - the home of Timbuktu - as the 156th world area of the Church of the Nazarene.
Africa is pursuing a solid strategy of leadership development, with the goal of having 20,000 trained pastors and ministers and 20,000 churches by 2012. The fruit of that effort can be seen in East Africa, where in October, Dr. David Graves presided over the ordination of 47 new elders - more than doubling the number of elders on that field.
Africa's story is one I have seen published already - Pastor Cooper from Liberia who was made fun of because of his lack of education so he went back to school and began a successful radio ministry that surprised all the people in his home village.
As a denomination, we firmly believe that God does great things and begins great movements through the obedience of just one person. The "Golden Youth" group at the Bayanihan Church of the Nazarene in Antipolo, Philippines, Asia-Pacific, demonstrates this. In November of 2008, one of the leaders of the youth group used a personal-sized EvangeCube to present the gospel to his friend, Angelo. Angelo responded and prayed to receive Christ into his life. Two months later, when Angelo was baptized as a new follower of Jesus, he began the outreach at his home. He soon had 14 young men meeting with him each week. He felt God's call to preach, and in June of 2009 moved to Cebu, Philippines, to begin his studies at the Visayan Nazarene Bible College. Then he asked some of the young teens in the Golden Youth to carry on the work when he left. Several of the teens leading the current ministry efforts are 14 years old. Two are in their first year of high school at San Jose. These young people actively lead this outreach each week, as well as minister in the Bayanihan Church two nights of the week and twice on Sundays. In the meantime at the Bible College, Angelo is praying for those in his home neighborhood, and he is ministering every weekend in two different places and helping to start a new church plant where they have started an outreach to street kids in Cebu, the city where they are studying.
In the large Haitian city of St. Marc in the Caribbean, the pastor of the local church is also the district superintendent. His local church averages over 2,000 in weekly attendance - and continues to grow. When asked how his church became so strong, he replied, "At first, I didn't know where to begin. I tried preaching in the street but people were so busy, and it was so noisy, I didn't know if anyone was listening to me. So I started an FM Radio Station in the back of the church.
From that beginning, this local pastor and his small congregation began broadcasting Christian music, ministry and discipleship messages, and the pastor began his "Midnight Prayer Ministry." Every night at midnight, he is "on the air." Some people began writing in to request prayer, and he prayed for them on the radio at the midnight radio service. As the availability of cell phones became a new source of communication, people would telephone the "Nazarene Radio Prayer Pastor" to ask for prayer. He took the opportunity to speak about many of life's deepest needs - and the audience grew. He said, "I wouldn't miss a night praying and preaching - I was on the air last night and I'll be there tonight."
Dr. Gustavo Crocker has given great leadership making Eurasia a fast growing region. The Eurasia Region is vast in so many ways: vast in geography, vast in cultural diversity, vast in economic strata, and vast in evangelical challenges. Despite all of this, Eurasia again reports double-digit percentage growth, with a net gain of over 15% and nearly 20,000 new members. This translates to 55 new members each day. What is not shown in those numbers is the fact that people are not saved and then brought immediately into membership; there is a growth and discipling period that must take place. These 55 new daily members were once new converts. Imagine what we'll see in a very short time as a result of the new converts on the region.
One indicator of the growth and maturity of the region was the largest and most diverse delegation of Eurasian delegates ever to attend a General Assembly. The Regional Advisory Council (RAC) approved the request for implementing mail balloting for electing the new General Board and RAC representatives. Thanks to this alternative provided by the Manual, 100% of the elected delegates were able to vote for the first time in electing their representatives. Furthermore, this was the first time in the history of the region that a representative from South Asia was elected to the General Board, and we are privileged to have Rev. Sukamal Biswas serving as one of our leaders. We are also pleased to see a South Asian elected as the regional NYI president.
The power of one extends not just to one person; it encompasses the life-transforming power that comes through the actions of one church or one district. When churches catch a vision of becoming full partners in the global work of the Great Commission, incredible things happen at all levels.
The Mexico/Central America (MAC) Region is seeing this happen through its involvement in the Isaiah and Caleb Projects. Seven volunteers have been trained to serve as missionaries in Spain and the Middle East over the past four years. In July these seven missionaries came home and told the story of the lives that have been transformed. These stories were not owned by just the missionaries; they were stories that were shared and celebrated by the local churches as well. As we evaluate their ministries, their training, and their opportunities for new ministry, we are simultaneously inspired by them to continue the work they have begun. Through initiatives such as Projects Isaiah and Caleb, MAC is truly becoming a sending region.
Pedro knew a life of drug and alcohol addiction that led him to a life of crime. He became known as one of the worst criminals in Derqui, Argentina, South America. He had been imprisoned several times, but all that did was slow down his criminal activity. Nothing seemed to stop him, and even the local police were afraid of Pedro.
Through a new Nazarene church plant, Pedro's wife received Christ as Lord and Savior and started attending Sunday School and church activities. A Nazarene missionary visited the community and showed the short film of the conversion of Felix Vargas and visited Pedro's home. Pedro thought that God could never forgive him. After seeing the video about Felix, who was saved from a life of murder, drugs, and crime, Pedro said, "If God can forgive him and change him, he can do it for me." Pedro was wonderfully saved. His life has changed dramatically. A few weeks ago he went to visit the police station where he was imprisoned many times. Immediately the police officer put him behind bars, afraid of Pedro. Pedro told the story of his conversion and presented the Felix video to the policemen. The chief of police said that he had been praying for many years for Pedro; now he can see the results of his prayers.
It has been a joy to work with Dr. Bob Broadbooks over this past year in his new role as director of USA/Canada. Recognizing that the traditional definition of missions had changed, the Board of General Superintendents and the General Board declared the United States and Canada a mission field in 1997. Twelve years later, we have the equivalent of seven regions with the addition of the United States and Canada, called the USA/Canada Office, which serves nine educational regions. This completes the restructure of the global mission and creates a truly global denomination.
McArthur Jackson was saved out of the "drug culture" of Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 27. McArthur quickly sensed a call to preach and began holding outreach worship services in the front lobby of the (Memphis Neighborhood Christian) Center. The focus was on reaching back into the drug culture of Memphis and to "deal with the struggling of the people." Early in his ministry, McArthur recognized that impacting the city of Memphis would require leadership development from within and starting many new ministries. McArthur and his wife, Millie, both completed their ordination educational requirements at the Tennessee District Memphis Bible Institute (MBI). They were ordained together at their district assembly in 2006. All those that God calls are encouraged to enroll in MBI as a place of clarification of the "calling." McArthur intentionally empowers his developing leaders to begin a new outreach ministry. Some of these ministries will develop into new churches. McArthur's 10-year-old church and the four newer churches they have sponsored have a combined worship attendance of about 300 people every Sunday morning. Each week they touch the lives of many times that number through as McArthur Jackson would say: "dealing with the struggling of the people."
