MNU profiled for green efforts
Olathe, Kansas
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU) is featured in the Green Awakenings Campus Report, released last month, chronicling environmental initiatives at 52 Christian colleges across the U.S. and Canada. The report is a project of Renewal, a student-led, Christian environmental group. According to Renewal's co-coordinator, Ben Lowe, a growing number of Christian college students are involved in green efforts on campus.
"The student generation in particular is stepping up to care for God's creation, but previously little was known about what this movement practically looked like on Christian campuses," Lowe says. "The Green Awakenings Campus Report demonstrates to the world what happens when Christian students and campuses come together to care for Creation. Our two-fold goal is to demonstrate to colleges, churches, and communities how we are working together for the renewal of God's creation, and inspire others to join us."
MNU has been recognized locally for recent green efforts including becoming "trayless" in the cafeteria - saving water and energy, recycling, and installing energy-efficient washers and dryers in residence halls. The new report highlights MNU's student-led community garden which now raises enough food that the university cafeteria has utilized its produce.
A student-coordinated Green Summit was held at MNU February16-18. Activities included Lowe speaking in chapel, a movie screening of Food, Inc., and the announcement of the MNU Sustainability Co-operative, a group of students, faculty, and staff who seek to promote and oversee eco-friendly initiatives on campus.
The group will coordinate ideas from students on new green initiatives, according to member Mitchell Cloud.
