Ambrose Lions — both men and women — triumph in futsal finals

The Olympics may be over in Canada, but there are still more gold medals to report. For the first time in the short history of the Ambrose Lions, both gold medals were won in one sport.

The men's and women's futsal* teams went to Three Hills, both undefeated in the season (men were 9-0 and women were 8-0-1), and both played outstandingly well to win their respective Alberta Colleges Athletic League (ACAL) championships.

The women faced Saint Mary's in the semi-final game on Friday night, March 5, and won with relative ease, 8-0. The men decided to make things interesting in their semi-final game. They were trailing Saint Mary's with less than two minutes to play in the game when Andrae Koschewski pumped one home to tie it up and send the game to overtime. In the extra session, co-captain Tim Shaw tipped home a great pass by Phil Seutter to seal the deal. The wins sent both of the teams to the championship game on Saturday afternoon, March 6. The women faced the Olds Broncos while the men were slated to face the host team, Prairie Pilots.

The women grabbed an early lead in their championship game with tallies from Lacey Campbell and Casey Boda, and then received stellar goaltending from Kelly MacGregor. It was a solid team effort with contributions from each player on the roster and the women won easily, 7-1.

That win set the table for the men. The men also jumped out to an early lead with goals from Andrae Koschewski and Ben Hollett and then relied on their veteran keeper, Kevin Reierson, to shut the door the rest of the way. The guys played hard and beat Prairie soundly, 6-2.

Ambrose Athletics Director Ryan Willison commented, "It was a fantastic day, and I have to admit I am still grinning from ear to ear and brimming with pride. Each player should be congratulated and our coaches did a fine job as well."

*Futsal is a form of soccer, usually played indoors, but without walls or boards and with a ball smaller than a soccer ball that doesn't have a lot of bounce to it. Click here for more information on the sport.
