On Wednesday, March 17, the Kankakee Daily Journal reported Michael W. Benson, former chaplain at Olivet Nazarene University, was in intensive care at Riverside Medical Center following an accident Tuesday, March 16, at the intersection of 1000W (Career Center) and 5000N (Indian Oaks) roads in Bourbonnais Township, Illinois.

"I visited with him in intensive care," Olivet President John Bowling told the newspaper Wednesday morning. "He has some broken ribs, but he's making good progress."

The report stated Benson was riding a motorcycle northbound on Career Center Road around 12:45 P.M. when a westbound vehicle on Indian Oaks Road turned in front of him. The driver, Luciann Latzko, 35, of Manhattan, was ticketed in connection with the accident, Bourbonnais Police Chief Joe Beard told the Daily Journal.

Benson served seven years as ONU chaplain before taking a new job last fall as director of University and Church Relations for the state of Indiana.

"He still lives in Bourbonnais and works here at ONU," Bowling said Wednesday.

NCN News learned early on Thursday, March 18, that Benson was released from intensive care and his condition was improving.

On March 25, the Daily Journal reported Benson was recuperating at his Bourbonnais home. He suffered three broken ribs and a skull fracture in the accident.

Benson told the newspaper it will be several more weeks before he returns to work.

"The outpouring of wishes from friends here in the community has been a great blessing to us," Benson said.
