Olathe, Kansas
Former Nazarene Theological Seminary (NTS) professor Donald George Whitlock (1940-2010) passed away Monday, April 12. He was 69. Surviving Whitlock are his wife, JoAnne; their children, Donald Andrew (Drew), JoDawn (Karnowski), and Scott; and one grandson.

Last May, Whitlock retired from NTS after serving as associate professor of Christian education for 25 years. NTS President Ron Benefiel reflected, "Don's voice of wisdom and long-term memory of NTS were a valuable contribution to our community. Throughout his tenure, he invested in and influenced hundreds, perhaps thousands of students that today serve and minister in the Church around the world."

An ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene, Whitlock received a bachelor's degree from the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada); the master's in religious education degree from NTS; and a master of arts degree in adult and continuing education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

In addition to his ministry at NTS, Whitlock was also a licensed real estate agent. Prior to his service at the Seminary, Whitlock served as a pastor in Washington state, a secondary education teacher, and a curriculum writer for the Church of the Nazarene. Whitlock also served as chairperson for the Department of Christian Education at Nazarene Bible College (Colorado Springs, Colorado).

Funeral services will be Saturday, April 17 at 4:00pm at Nazarene Theological Seminary, where the family will receive friends an hour prior to service time. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 16, 6:00-8:00pm, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the NTS Scholarship Fund in honor of Donald Whitlock.

On the occasion of his retirement last year, some of his colleagues and former students shared memories of and offered tributes to Professor Whitlock in the Summer 2009 issue of the NTS Connection. To read this article, click here.
