Former D.S. Dr. James R. Blankenship passes away

Former pastor and district superintendent James R. "Dr. B" Blankenship of Lubbock, Texas, went to be with the Lord on April 15.

Blankenship was a graduate of Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University), where he earned a bachelor of theology degree. He also attended the University of Tulsa, the University of Texas, and later received a doctor of divinity degree from Southern Nazarene University.

During his pastoral career, Blankenship served at Pawhuska (Oklahoma), Tulsa Regency Park (Oklahoma), Austin Grace (Texas), and St. Louis Webster Groves (Missouri).

In 1973, he became superintendent of the Northwestern Ohio District, where he served until 1980 when he became superintendent of the San Antonio District (now South Texas). He served in this capacity for 22 years.

Upon his retirement, Blankenship and his wife of 58 years, Christine (Chris), moved to Lubbock to be close to family. Chris took care of him at home during his illness.

"[Dr. B] and Chris were both loved and highly respected by the people of the San Antonio District," stated current South Texas District Superintendent Duane Srader. "He will be long remembered and missed."
 
Services for Blankenship will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, April 19, at Lubbock First Church of the Nazarene, 6110 Chicago,
Lubbock, TX 79424. Viewing will take place Sunday, April 18, from 5-7 P.M. at Resthaven Funeral Home & Cemetery, 5740 West 19th Street, Lubbock, TX 79407. Donations in Blankenship's name may be made to the Southern Nazarene University Ministry Scholarship.
