On June 11, Korea Nazarene University (KNU) was once again selected as a recipient for a grant on the "Education Competency Strengthening Project" by the Ministry of Education.

KNU was also selected in 2009. In Cheonan-Asan Province, there were only two other universities selected, meaning KNU will be play a lead role in local education.

Inauguration service for 10th chairman of the board

An inauguration ceremony for the 10th chairman of the board of the Nazarene Educational Foundation, Doo-Hyun You, was held on Monday, June 28, in Patch Hall on the KNU campus.

The ceremony began with special recognition to the outgoing 8th and 9th chairman, Hae-Choon Hyun. Approximately 300 participants from various fields, including Korea District Superintendent Young-Sik Lee, attended.

In his inauguration speech, You emphasized that he would continually focus on the sprit of Christian education and would like to nurture future leaders and ministers who serve throughout the world in the Church of the Nazarene.

You has already demonstrated outstanding leadership and courage in his various roles of ministry. He has served the Church of the Nazarene in Korea as and effective district superintendent and is currently serving as a pastor in Seoul and also as chairman of the board of Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary in the Philippines.

During the ceremony, special video greetings from overseas were introduced: Donald Owens, KNU founder; William Patch, the second and third KNU president; Jerry D. Porter, general superintendent, and LeBron Fairbanks, global commissioner of education for the Church of the Nazarene.

You's four year term began June 19.

KNU gets Admissions Officer System Fund

KNU was selected to "The Admissions Officer Supporting System" by the Ministry of Education. The ministry will grant a certain amount of funds to KNU which will be used to hire admissions officers.

In April, the Education Ministry and the Korean Council for University Education announced plans to support the admissions officer system for college entrance this year.

A total of 1.5 billion won will be spent in supporting seven universities which run independent education programs for admissions officers and teachers. KNU is among these universities.

The Admissions Officer System was brought into effect under the Lee Myung-bak administration to lighten excessive educational competition and curb demand for private education. It involves professional admissions officers evaluating and sorting out talented students in different fields.

KNU president's donation

KNU President Abraham Seuna-an Im donated 76,779,156 won (approximately $64,000 U.S. dollars) for the new chapel building project at the university. Hyun Hae Choon, chairman of the KNU Board of Trustees, gave a trophy expressing deepest thanks to Im on Monday, February 22.

Im encouraged the faculty and staff to donate one percent of their family event income. He led the way by donating this gift. The Christian philosophy he lives by is, "helping others in need is the best life." Three hundred faculty and staff members have recently participated in two university development projects, including the rehabilitation center and the new chapel building.

Im's personal giving has special meaning since he is a graduate of KNU and has served as academic dean, vice president, and now serves as president. He lost his mother when he was in elementary school and the church became a family to him. As the church gave him hope when he needed it most, Im's gift is for the purpose of giving that same hope to others in need like he was.

In 1998, when KNU was declared to be specialized in welfare and rehabilitation, Im was in charge of developing these programs. Today, KNU is recognized by the Ministry of Education as being the best university in Korea in these fields. In 2009 Im was awarded the Global CEO award in the field of education by the Joong-ang Daily-Forbes Korea.

In the future, Im expects KNU to be a global university closely cooperating with Nazarene universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities that focuses on student and faculty exchange programs.
