The Board of General Superintendents has announced the election of J. Bret Metcalfe, pastor of the Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, Lakeside Community Church of the Nazarene, to the office of district superintendent of the Pittsburgh District. With General Superintendent David W. Graves presiding, Metcalfe was elected on the eighth ballot on July 24 at the 103rd Pittsburgh District assembly, held in Butler, Pennsylvania, at the Mount Chestnut Nazarene Center.

Metcalfe's election came after Stephen Dillman resigned in June to accept the position of director of Church Relations for Eastern Nazarene College.

Metcalfe has served on the Pittsburgh District since 1996 when he came to pastor the Greenville Lifeway Church of the Nazarene in Greenville, Pennsylvania. In 2001, the Ebensburg Lakeside Community Church of the Nazarene called Metcalfe to be their pastor, where he will continue to serve until he takes up the duties of the superintendent on September 1.

According to the Pittsburgh District, each of Metcalfe's pastoral assignments were marked with significant growth and numerous awards. He has served as the district secretary for more than 11 years and also served on the District Advisory Board of the Pittsburgh District and other boards and committees.

Metcalfe is married to Terri, who also serves in various capacities of district ministry. She has been the District Nazarene Youth International treasurer for several years and most recently serves as a lay member of the District Advisory Board.

When the election was announced, the district reports delegates responded with spontaneous applause and a standing ovation. Metcalfe and Terri received flowers in honor of their election. Bret Metcalfe responded to the election with the comment that "I accept on one condition - that you not stop praying for me." He spoke of the change that he sensed coming in his life, but said that this had come before he knew Dillman intended to resign. He said that he and Terri were praying and waiting on the Lord to reveal His will.

Graves, the general superintendent in jurisdiction, commented on the "rightness" of the delegate's selection and expressed a positive opinion regarding the future of the district under the leadership of Metcalfe.
