Concurrent with Point Loma Nazarene University's (PLNU) annual Creation Care Week, PLNU has launched a new partnership with Zipcar Inc., to provide students, staff, faculty and community members access to the world's leading car-sharing service. The cost-effective and convenient transportation option is now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

With Zipcar, PLNU will be able to help ease congestion on campus, lower costs, and decrease the demand for parking, in an economical and sustainable way. Every Zipcar takes 15 to 20 privately owned vehicles off the road. Gas, 180 miles per day, insurance, reserved parking spots, and roadside assistance are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as short as an hour or for up to four days. Rates on all PLNU vehicles start as low as $8 per hour and $66 per day (24 hours).

The annual membership fee for anyone affiliated with PLNU is only $35 and PLNU applicants receive $35 worth of free driving credit that applies toward their first month of driving.

"We have been nationally recognized for our leadership in sustainability," said Caye Barton Smith, vice president for Student Development at PLNU. "By partnering with Zipcar, we are showing our campus community that there is a more cost effective and environmentally responsible way to travel." Two Zipcars are located in convenient, high-demand areas on campus. Drivers can also download Zipcar's fun and functional iPhone app to reserve a Zipcar, honk the horn to locate it, and unlock the doors remotely.

"When sending a child away to college, parents have to think about the additional expense of parking, gas and maintenance, while most of the time, the car sits idle," said Matthew Malloy, vice president of Global University Operations at Zipcar. "Zipcar is providing these parents and schools, such as PLNU, with a convenient, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative - a benefit that universities across North America and the UK have already experienced."

Zipcar has established partnerships with more than 200 universities. They utilize a network of local vendors to service and clean its fleet.
