Members of the Commission on the Nazarene Future concluded a year of study on "What makes us Nazarene?" in an effort to draft an overall report on recommended changes for the global Church of the Nazarene.

The commission, which was authorized at the 2009 General Assembly, met from November 30 to December 1 at the Global Ministry Center in Lenexa, Kansas, to craft an outline for pursuing their objectives. This outline was shared with the Board of General Superintendents for their review.

The commission focused on identifying non-negotiables, thus freeing their recommendations from non-essential change. Commission members received a report from Rich Houseal, Nazarene Research Center, summarizing the input from 193 individuals representing every world region.

The feedback came from a survey the commission delivered and made available on its website, asking such questions as:

  • From your background, experience, and time in the Church, what does it mean to be "Nazarene?"
  • "Ecclesiology" is a word which describes the theological understanding of the Church: its purpose, nature, and mission; its sacraments and divine worship; the ministry and church leadership. Based on this definition, what should not be changed about Nazarene "ecclesiology?"
  • Polity is a denomination's system of governance. Based on this definition, what should not be changed about the Church of the Nazarene's system of governance?

(To read all the survey questions, visit the Commission on the Nazarene Future website.)

"The input received was very helpful to the commission," said J. David McClung, commission chair. "It showed that there is a common understanding of the things that are important to preserve.  There were also some interesting ideas about what changes are needed."

The commission did not release any detailed information on the survey responses.

Members of the commission will work for two more years on a final report, meeting April 5-6, 2011, and November 8-9, 2011. In 2011, the commission will address the issue of "How can the Church be even more effective?"

The following year, the commission is scheduled to meet April 10-11, 2012, and July 23-24, 2012, to work on a final report for the Board of General Superintendents.

The final report on the Nazarene Future will incorporate three years of discussion on Nazarene ecclesiology, polity, and missional strategy and give particular attention to the role of the general superintendency, including:

  • An expressed vision for the future of the Church of the Nazarene, including the changes recommended by the commission.
  • A draft of a "Global Manual," The draft will include Manual changes recommended by the commission. Portions of the Manual that are not substantively changed will be updated with the goal of simplification.
  • A draft of Amended Articles of Incorporation.
  • A plan for implementation of the changes recommended.

The General Board will bring any necessary recommendations to the 28th General Assembly for consideration and action in 2013.

"The General Assembly designed the Commission on the Nazarene Future to be different from any prior commission," McClung said. "At our first session, we worked through those differences to design a plan to accomplish the mandate."
