Asbury University becomes a partner institution of the Manchester Wesley Research Centre
Wednesday, October 19, 2011
Manchester, England
By Geordan Hammond, MWRC Director
The Manchester Wesley Research Centre recently welcomed Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, as its ninth partner institution.
Based at Nazarene Theological College, Manchester, England, the MWRC operates as a partnership of institutions working together to support and promote research in Wesleyan Studies.
The aim of this collaboration is to develop the MWRC into an international center of research for students and established scholars. This has been realized through regular research visits from faculty at partner institutions, and the research of over 40 PhD students studying at these institutions.
The MWRC helps facilitate research access to the world’s richest collection of early Methodist material at the Methodist Archives and Research Centre, John Rylands University Library of Manchester.
In the ongoing collaboration of the MWRC, Asbury University joins eight other partners: Asbury Theological Seminary, Cliff College, the International Board of Education of the Church of the Nazarene, Nazarene Theological College, Nazarene Theological Seminary, Point Loma Nazarene University, The University of Manchester John Rylands Library, and The University of Manchester Religions and Theology Subject Area.
Jon Kulaga, provost of Asbury University, recently visited MWRC on the campus of Nazarene Theological College.
“As we continue to develop the Wesley Studies Center at Asbury University—Asbury Theological Seminary, we are seeking ways to create opportunities for our faculty and students to have access to the tremendous wealth of research materials and opportunities at the MWRC and the John Rylands Library,” Kulaga said. “Partnering with the MWRC was a natural connection for Asbury University — given both entities long standing and vital commitment to our Wesleyan theological heritage.
“Asbury University has a mandatory cross-cultural requirement for all its graduates. We believe the resources and research opportunities at the MWRC create a perfect opportunity for Asbury University ministry, missions, and biblical studies major to enhance their education while fulfilling that requirement at the same time.”
“It was great to have this firsthand experience visiting the MWRC, meeting the staff and faculty, and visiting the librarians and archivists at the Rylands," Kulaga added. "I come away from this experience with a much greater personal appreciation for the opportunities available to our faculty and students at the MWRC, and a greater commitment to see a variety of exchanges occur between the two centers.”
