An innovative church plant in Edmond, Oklahoma, dreamed of new ways to spread the power of the gospel by engaging technology and harnessing its potential.
Bobby Gruenewald, innovation leader for the fast-growing congregation, tells the story of being in Chicago’s O'Hare airport and asking himself the question, "What could today’s technology mean for the Bible? Could it spark revolution?"
From that moment, a seed-thought, growing not only in his mind but in the minds and hearts of his colleagues at LifeChurch.tv in Oklahoma, began to grow into an astounding tool for spreading the message of the Bible.
The YouVersion Bible app for cell phones and tablets was born and is now available in at least 45 languages with global downloads topping 34 million. Many believers incorporate this app into their devotional routines, discovering Bible-reading plans that help them grow in the Lord.
"Bobby Gruenewald is a Southern Nazarene University graduate who has chosen to reach people through every available means,” said Stan Toler, Church of the Nazarene general superintendent and close friend of Gruenewald.
Toler alluded to the potential of YouVersion's app for the Bible reading emphasis sponsored jointly by Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries International and the American Bible Society, Engage the Word.
"The Bible app is an incredible way to involve people in Bible reading through the SDMI & ABS Engage the Word emphasis," he said.
“The church aims at reaching 85 percent of the people around the world with the Bible app by the end of 2012," said Gruenewald.
