The story of Sam Karmas, an Australian Nazarene who went missing nearly a year ago, is not over. This week is Missing Persons Week in the Australian state of New South Wales, and the state's police department will continue to feature Karmas' profile.
On August 11, 2011, the 52-year-old father of three stayed home to order supplies for his construction business. Later in the day, he went out to help a neighbor and left his keys and wallet at home. The neighbor reported that around 2:30 Karmas said he had to go somewhere and simply walked away.
He was never seen again.
For weeks authorities, who suspected foul play, searched for Karmas with no success. His whereabouts remain unknown.
The week will be significant for Sam's wife, Jenny, and the rest of the Karmas family.
"This will mean major exposure in the media, billboards, and other forms of advertisement in the hopes that someone will come forward with information about Sam's disappearance," Jenny said. "I have been asked to speak about Sam's disappearance and how we are coping. We will also be involved in live interviews on the ABC Breakfast show, and channel 7's Sunrise program as well as various radio interviews during the day.
"Please pray for our family. Pray that the Lord gives us the strength and peace to do what is necessary for us to appeal to the public. Pray that we can take every opportunity to shine the light of Jesus to those we speak to and that others will see the His peace in us. Pray that those that know something will be moved to come forward and speak up."
In an article published by The Sydney Telegraph, Jenny describes being torn between hope and the truth.
"Every time there's a report about a body or human bones being found, I think, is it Sam? Are they going to call me?" she said. "I'm relieved when they don't, yet I know I'm postponing the inevitable."
The Karmas family will hold a memorial for Sam on August 11 at their church, the Enmore Church of the Nazarene.
"Thank you so much for your prayers, love, and support for our family during this time," Jenny said.
