Off to college: Happy things didn't go according to plan
Bethany, Oklahoma

(The Oklahoman, August 6) Bethany’s Gage Diffee had his plan all laid out.

Air Force Academy to become a pilot. Walk on with the Falcons’ football team as a receiver. Major in behavioral sciences, maybe add a master’s degree to pursue a career in family counseling.

After he wasn’t appointed to the Air Force Academy, Gage Diffee decided to attend Southern Nazarene, where he will redshirt this season while studying ministry and theology.

In his eyes, the path was clear. But as his parents have always taught him, his plan isn’t the one that matters.

“God had a different plan for me,” Diffee said with the genuine smile that rarely leaves his face.

Soft sell: Churches reach out to neighbors with secular events
Springfield, Illinois

(State Journal-Register, August 3) An invitation to neighbors to Hope Church’s recent Rock the Lawn celebration included this from the church’s senior pastor, the Rev. Blake Carter:

“We promise, no churchy stuff. No plates will be passed unless they have BBQ or hot dogs on them.”

“I did mention (our service schedule), but really we just wanted to serve people and have them have a positive experience,” said Beth Funk, Hope’s connections coordinator.

First Church of the Nazarene’s Neighborhood Connection Festival earlier this summer also served up free food and music, attended by about 400 members and their friends and neighbors of the south-side church.

“It’s really meant to promote goodwill for our neighbors,” said First Nazarene’s senior pastor, the Rev. Fred Prince. “It’s to show them who we are.”
