Olathe, Kansas
MidAmerica Nazarene University is launching a new track in their Master of Education program this month. In as few as 18 months, an adaptive special education track will prepare teachers to meet the learning and behavioral needs of all students, including those with mild to moderate disabilities.

Courses will meet once a week on MNU’s Olathe campus. The program enables candidates to earn an endorsement in elementary (K-6), middle school (5-8), high school (9-12), or K-12 instruction.

The new degree strikes a balance between specialized and comprehensive material to prepare teachers to serve students with varied needs, said Neil Friesland, program director and education professor.

“Teachers will learn how to meet the needs to of all students in their classroom,” Friesland said. “This program fills the gaps within the public school system for schools that need special education teachers, and since it’s a high-turnover position, it’s always a highly needed position. This program will enable teachers to meet that demand.”

MNU also offers four other Master of Education tracks: Teaching and learning, technology enhanced teaching, English for speakers of other languages, and reading instruction. To learn more about the Master of Education in Adaptive Special Education degree at MNU, visit mnu.edu/master-education.
