Generous giving gets Bonita Park on road to recovery
Thursday, August 23, 2012
Capitan, New Mexico
After the Little Bear Fire destroyed 138 buildings at the New Mexico District's Bonita Park Camp and Conference Center, it was uncertain whether the summer camps could resume on schedule. After much prayer and deliberation, the District Advisory Board decided it was safe to proceed.
"In quick succession, three camps — children's, youth, and the family camp meeting — were held in faith, believing that God would meet with us in unusual ways," said J. Fred Huff, New Mexico district superintendent.
"He did."
At the end of those camps, more than 300 children, youth, and adults made decisions to follow Christ.
Several financial gifts were given to the camp as the summer camping season progressed. Local churches from other denominations gave a $15,000 gift. The Church of the Nazarene's South Carolina District gave $2,000 to help ensure that camp meeting could continue, and at the close of the camp meeting services where David Gallimore was the only evangelist, a member of the New Mexico District gave a $100,000 check to Executive Camp Director Director Stan Yocom to be used for rebuilding.
"Bonita Park is God's camp, and he is providing through his people," Huff said. "Please continue to pray for God's wisdom as we make daily decisions."
