Guatemalan government honors Church of the Nazarene

On August 28, the Guatemalan Presidential Commission on Human Rights, the Peace Secretariat, and the National Compensation Program held the Rose of Peace Ceremony to honor the children orphaned during the Guatemalan Civil War. The ceremony was held at the national palace in Guatemala City.

During the ceremony, the Church of the Nazarene was awarded a distinction for serving dozens of orphans during the war by building an orphanage in San Miguel Chicaj (northern Guatemala), known as Hogar del Niño, or Children's Home. District Superintendent Nery Perez and his wife, along with Florentina Mendoza, received the award on behalf of the Church of the Nazarene.

Hogar del Niño opened in 1985 and housed 40 children. The project was conducted by hundreds of Nazarenes from Guatemala and around the world. The leadership team included James and Betty Hudson, regional director; Elizardo Urizar, chairman; current Eurasia Regional Director Gustavo Crocker, architect; Mardoqueo Monteroso, designer; Helmer and Susy Juarez, managers; Mateo Mendoza, orphanage director and translator; Cornelio and Ana Diaz, general contractor; Stanley and Norma Storey, Work and Witness coordinators; and hundreds of Nazarene youth who built the facilities.
