Guatemalan Nazarenes affected by earthquake
Friday, November 9, 2012
Guatemala, Mesoamerica Region
Guatemala experienced a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, November 7. Western Guatemala District Superintendent René Marroquin reported Nazarene families' homes and area churches sustained damage.
Some Nazarene families suffered serious damage to the walls and rooftops of their houses. The temple of the San Marcos Church of the Nazarene was damaged, as was the Mazatenango Temple.
Marroquin hopes to visit affected areas to more accurately assess the damage. The area is considered one of the most affected in Guatemala.
There are 48 confirmed deaths and more than a hundred people are still missing. In San Pedro, one person was hospitalized for head trauma and 11 people were killed in Xela. There are many homeless people in San Marcos and San Cristobal Cucho. In Coatepeque, a Christian man experienced problems with his diabetes after shock and trauma caused by the earthquake.
Please pray for district leaders as they help those affected by the disaster. Pray for the region's Nazarene Compassionate Ministries personnel as they await reports and determine how best to assist.
