General Superintendent Eugénio R. Duarte announced the appointment of David W. Sharpes this week as the new superintendent of the Upstate New York District. The appointment comes with the approval of the Board of General Superintendents and in consultation with the District Advisory Committee.

"God clearly confirmed His calling to guide and encourage the work of the Church of the Nazarene in Upstate New York as I met with the District Advisory Council," Sharpes said in response to the appointment. "What an excellent group of God-called leaders who have a great heart for our great God. We are trusting Him for all He wants to do in and through us together in the days ahead."

Sharpes has pastored CrossRoads Church of the Nazarene in Chandler, Arizona, since 2007. Other pastorates and staff responsibilities include Fairview Village Church of the Nazarene in Pennsylvania and Lima Community Church of the Nazarene in Ohio. He and his wife, Carol Lynne, have two children, Jonathan and Hannah.

This change in leadership comes after the previous superintendent, Bill Carr, was elected in June to lead the Rocky Mountain District.

"In this new position, Dave Sharpes will add a lot of good to the Upstate New York District, the USA/Canada district superintendents’ team, and the denomination," Duarte said. "He is a creative, visionary, and missional leader. I am very encouraged about the future of the Church of the Nazarene on the Upstate New York District."

Sharpes graduated from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts in practical theology. He went on to earn a Master of Divinity degree at Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1988 and a Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2003.

"Our family is excited about this new season of ministry in Upstate New York," Sharpes said. "Already our hearts are sensing an excitement in all of the possibilities that can become realities when an obedient people join God in His desire to see His kingdom come and His will done."

The newly elected district superintendent will begin his assignment in January.
