Florida districts move forward with possible merger
Thursday, December 6, 2012
USA/Canada Region
In 2009, three Church of the Nazarene Florida district superintendents first met to discuss merger possibilities. Florida was one district until 1973 when the state was divided into the three existing districts: Southern, now led by David Nixon; Central, now led by Larry Dennis; and North, now led by Orville Jenkins Jr.
The initial discussions resulted in a joint meeting of the three district advisory boards in 2011, followed by the formation of a study task force. The task force's final report was submitted as a proposal to all three advisory boards on Thursday, November 29. The boards will recommend to unite at least two of the districts, North and Central, while the Southern District will take additional time before making a final determination.
This recommendation will be presented to both district assemblies in May 2013, and must be ratified by a two-thirds vote of the delegates present at those assemblies. If passed, it would become official with the combined 2014 district assembly, allowing a transition and preparation period of one year.
In the six months before the upcoming May assemblies, informational meetings about the merger will take place on both the North and Central Districts.
