Trevecca, Vanderbilt team up for health clinic
Thursday, December 13, 2012
Nashville, Tennessee
Trevecca Nazarene University's Physician Assistant Program, Urban Housing Solutions, and Vanderbilt University worked together to establish a new health clinic to serve an often-neglected segment of Nashville, Tennessee’s population.
Traci Patton, a health advocate and 1996 Trevecca graduate, and the Vanderbilt School of Nursing oversee the clinic, which is located in a former office building on Murfreesboro Road. Trevecca PA students and advance practice nurses provide medical services.
Public housing residents and persons living in Nashville’s low-income Urban Housing Solutions can obtain free medical services at the clinic. Other members of the community can use the clinic’s services for $10 per visit. Residents of Urban Housing Solutions and residents of the community praise the clinic and the services it provides, such as management of chronic illnesses and diseases, management of acute-care needs, physicals, lab work, prescriptions, patient education and counseling, and referrals.
Prior to the clinic's establishment, Trevecca PA students provided some services to this population through seasonal health fairs and weekly workshops. The clinic's opening increased the level and frequency of medical services to this population.
Trevecca PA Program faculty member Robin Jewett explained her enthusiasm for the clinic.
"Four years of Trevecca building relationships and responding to health needs in this community has naturally extended to this great step toward development of better healthcare," she said. "Seeing the medical needs in our immediate neighborhood being met in such a tangible way is a powerful example of our call to love our neighbors as we love ourselves."
