Jamaica District, Ohio center collaborate on new medical center
Thursday, February 7, 2013
Frome, Jamaica
In the past four years, the Church of the Nazarene's Jamaica West District and the Ohio-based Mission of Sight ministry center worked together on the construction of Gamertsfelder Medical and Educational Centre, a state-of-the-art, multipurpose facility in Jamaica. The completed center will officially launch on Thursday, March 21.
The building will house clinical space for optical, dental, medical, and surgical procedures, as well as a pharmacy, day care, and child development facility.
In collaboration with Jamaica's Ministry of Health, the center will supply health care services to the area. Ministry of Health contracted physicians and surgeons who lack necessary facilities can use the center to provide medical treatment.
The center will also facilitate missional support from the medical community abroad on a regular basis. This medical tourism will boost available services and provide additional resources and support to community health centers and the local hospital.
Resources from the center could also benefit the area. A 40-foot container of medical supplies and equipment was recently sent to the Jamaica West District. The quantity of supplies and equipment far exceeded what could be utilize in the Gamertsfelder Centre, so a portion of the container was donated to other health centers and the Savanna-la-mar Hospital.
The Gamertsfelder Centre's mission is to glorify God and help improve accessibility to basic and specialty health care. The organization strives to find the most effective way to positively impact those it serves.
