One Heart – Many Hands reports more than 1,000 Nazarenes from across the U.S. registered for this summer's Work and Witness project in Indianapolis, but many more volunteers are still needed.

The June 16 to 21 project preceding the Church of the Nazarene's General Assembly and Conventions offers individuals and groups a great opportunity to experience hands-on missions and ministry without having to travel overseas.

Preparations for the large-scale project are in full motion with OHMH staffers already relocated to Indianapolis. Pre-project activities include detailing and assessing each job site; meeting with the families that will benefit from volunteers' efforts; and networking with local churches, businesses, and governmental leaders that are critical to the success of the project.

One of the homeowners that participants will serve this summer is "Bill," an 83-year-old veteran and widower who lives alone on the east side of Indianapolis. His roof leaks and he needs help with painting and other small projects around his home.

He recalls a time during boot camp more than 60 years ago when one of his fellow army recruits was reduced to tears by rough treatment from a drill sergeant. In a rare moment of compassion, the drill sergeant informed the distressed recruit that when graduation day arrived, he would celebrate — even cry — with the young man. But it was not yet the day to celebrate, or lay down and cry; it was the day to get up and work. So they did.

Bill's story continues to inspire the OHMH staff. There will be a time to celebrate and cry with Bill and the hundreds of others whose living conditions will improve when the projects are complete, but today is not that day. Today, and most every day until June 21, will be spent ensuring that as many people as possible can be helped.

Contact One Heart – Many Hands and let the staff know you are interested in learning more about volunteering this summer.

General Assembly is the "supreme doctrine-formulating, lawmaking, and elective authority of the Church of the Nazarene" (Manual, 300). The assembly and auxiliary conventions (Nazarene Missions International, Nazarene Youth International, and Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries International) convene every four years, bringing together Nazarenes from around the globe. The 2013 event will take place at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, June 19-27, 2013.
