During the 90th Session of General Board, General Superintendent David W. Graves recognized retiring Nazarene Publishing House President C. Hardy Weathers for his years of service to the Church of the Nazarene.

Weathers began his career in the Olathe, Kansas, School District as a teacher and principal. For 23 years Weathers served with now General Superintendent Emeritus Paul G. Cunningham as minister of music and executive pastor of College Church of the Nazarene in Olathe. He was asked to become the director of marketing for Nazarene Publishing House by former NPH President Robert Foster. Weathers also served as vice president of enrollment for MidAmerica Nazarene University, a position he held for two years.

"Dr. Weathers has had a distinguished career and has made a significant impact wherever he has served," Graves said. "I had the privilege of working closely with him for five years when I served as director of Sunday School Ministries... and for three years as his pastor."

Weathers was elected the seventh president of Nazarene Publishing House in 1998, succeeding Robert Brower, now president of Point Loma Nazarene University. Weathers served as president for 14 years before announcing his retirement at the 2012 Session of General Board.

"There are many qualities that can be highlighted tonight, but most significant is Dr. Weathers' churchmanship and passionate leadership," Graves said. "As a lifetime Nazarene, he has passionately led Nazarene Publishing House. It was not unusual for Dr. Weathers' eyes to fill with tears and for there to be a catch in his voice as he talked about his love for and commitment to NPH and the Church of the Nazarene.

"No one ever doubted his love for God and his loyalty to the denomination he served," Graves continued. "As president of NPH, one of his consistent reminders to those who worked with him and for him was, 'Content is of critical importance.' The message of holiness was constantly on his mind and heart.

"Dr. Weathers was not only a passionate leader, but also a man of prayer. In his work with the employees of NPH, he consistently challenged them to be people who took prayer seriously. He did not attempt decisions without bathing them in prayer. His confidence in God has been the foundation of his leadership. Many of us have received one of his hand-written notes that said, 'The staff at NPH and I are lifting you in prayer this week.' Dr. Weathers, you will never know how much those words meant to all of us.

"Dr. Weathers is a dedicated husband and loving father and proud grandfather and a friend to all," Graves said. "In this new chapter in your lives, we are grateful for the way you have lived your life before us and for your leadership in the Church of the Nazarene. May God continue to bless you and Lucille and your family."

Weathers' service as NPH president ended upon his retirement in November 2012. Gerald Smith currently serves as Nazarene Publishing House president.

The General Board also recognized retiring General Editor David J. Felter for his 27 years of service to the Church of the Nazarene at the denomination's International Headquarters/Global Ministry Center. Felter will retire in July 2013.
