Ambrose partners with Church of God
Monday, March 4, 2013
Calgary, Alberta
Ambrose University College entered into a partnership agreement built around common values and ministry goals with the Church of God in Western Canada. This agreement strengthens the diversity of the Ambrose community and designates Ambrose University College as a preferred institution for training candidates for ministry in the Church of God.
Formerly Canada Nazarene University College, Ambrose was founded by Church of the Nazarene Canada and the Christian & Missionary Alliance in Canada. The school's chancellor, Riley Coulter, is an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene.
For the past year, the Church of God in Western Canada has been looking for places to train clergy and to advise their youth to attend post–secondary school. Ambrose agreed to support the Church of God — a fellow Wesleyan denomination — by providing a campus–based training option for their ministry students.
Under this agreement, Ambrose plans to offer Church of God distinctive courses and to work with their churches for practicum and internship placements. Ambrose is also instituting a scholarship program for ministry candidates that are approved by the Church of God.
Besides common roots, this partnership emerges from a synthesis of resources and goals. One of Ambrose's priorities is to welcome denominations in Western Canada who do not have their own colleges to connect with the school for vocational training.
Recently, Arts and Science Dean Ken Draper and Theology Dean Arch Wong attended the Church of God's Annual General Meeting to connect with prospective students and address the assembly about Ambrose.
"Arch and I had a great time at the Church of God AGM," Draper said. "We were hosted well and had many good conversations with prospective students."
Students, staff, and faculty at Ambrose look forward to welcoming many of these individuals in coming semesters. As a community that seeks to enfold Christ followers from many confessional backgrounds, Ambrose is delighted to be partnering with a church that holds "a commitment to seeking what Christians have in common and to build[ing] on those things rather than emphasizing differences."
