Church launches community cafe in Woodside, Watford
Watford, England

(Watford Observer, January 27)  A new community cafe that aims to break down social barriers has been launched in north Watford.

Following similar schemes in Leavesden Green and Meriden areas, the Church of Nazarene, in The Brow, will welcome residents looking for a cup of coffee and a chat for two hours between 3pm and 5pm every Tuesday.

The project was led by the church, local councillors, Watford Community Housing Trust, the Woodside Action Group and ward police officers PCSO Vanessa Howden-Smith and PC Adam Thurston.

Erica Tuxworth, who became the pastor at the Church of the Nazarene 18 months ago, said: "We felt we wanted to reach the community. That coincided with residents getting stressed out about anti-social behaviour and things on the estate.

Local church experiences the Beatitudes of the Bible with social 'experiments'
Jackson, Tennessee

(Jackson Sun, January 23) In late 2009, the pastor of Thrive Church (of the Nazarene) in Jackson preached a sermon series titled "Christian Fail," which explored the bad reputation Christians have in the world. As a result of this series, pastor Herb Halstead wanted to teach something to counter all the bad, so he introduced the church to a new series that has life applications.

"We have an uphill battle to fight in the world," Halstead said. "There are people who don't trust Christians. People outside the church see all the garbage on the news - they see the hypocrisy all day from pastors and other Christians. I thought, 'How can we change this?'"

Thrive is only a couple of weeks into the Kingdom Experiment, an eight-week sermon series that focuses on each element listed in the Beatitudes, he said.

Fresno Church Celebrates 100 Years
Fresno, California

(KFSN, January 11) Members of Fresno First Church of the Nazarene celebrated the anniversary with a special service.

The congregation started inside of a tent in 1908, and then formally became an organization in 1910.

"Many churches make it 80 years and that's about the limit. But we've proven that to be not the case here," said retired minister Vern McDaniel.

The church has moved several times since 1910.

During Sunday's celebration, pictures and news clippings from the past were on display to show how far the church has come in the last century.
