Mudslides kill at least 130 in El Salvador
Verapaz, El Salvador
Friday, November 13, 2009
Mudslides caused by heavy rains have buried communities in El Salvador. As of November 9, at least 130 people had died and dozens were missing. More than 13,000 people were staying in emergency shelters.
According to information obtained by the Mexico and Central America Region Office, four members of the family of Nazarene Rafael Portillo died after being buried in the mudslides of Verapaz, El Salvador. Portillo is the Nazarene Missions International (NMI) president of the San Mateo Church of the Nazarene in the Salvadorian capital of San Salvador. This same church is serving as a distribution center for clothing, food, and bottled water, which are the priority needs at this time for disaster victims. NMI and Nazarene Compassionate Ministries of the El Salvador Central District are coordinating the collection of these items from their churches and delivering them to emergency agencies.
In addition, a church in the Mojon La Flor community suffered damage when a retaining wall that separates the church from a river of sewage that passes by in a ravine was destroyed by the rushing river.
The Mexico and Central America Region requests prayer for the following:
Persons and churches wishing to help can make a donation through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries and mark their checks "MAC Disaster Relief ACM1200" and mail them to the Global Treasury Services, PO Box 843116 Kansas City, MO 64184. In Canada, checks should be made payable and sent to the Church of the Nazarene Canada, 20 Regan Road, Unit 9, Brampton, Ontario L7A 1C3. Online donations can be made by clicking here: ncm.org.
