Australian ministry hosts "Touch 4 Samoa" football tournament and family fun day
Queensland, Australia
Thursday, November 12, 2009
On Saturday, November 7, Hardout Community Services, a not-for-profit organisation run by members of the Logan Community Church of the Nazarene in the state of Queensland, Australia, organised the "Touch 4 Samoa" football (Rugby League) tournament and family fun day.
"The day was all about helping our brothers and sisters in Samoa reaching out to those affected by the Samoa tsunami and at the same time reaching out to the broader community of Logan City," said Shane Fa'ata'ape, an elder in the Church of the Nazarene and a member of the event team.
The tournament was part of Hardout's efforts to raise funds to get a shipping container of much needed aid to the tsunami-affected areas of Samoa. In total, $3,806.70 (AUD) [$3,554 USD] was raised at the event.
The tournament included 24 teams in three categories competing for trophies that were generously donated by local businesses. Teams came from local churches, as well as the broader community and businesses sponsoring the event.
The crowd, estimated to be just over 400, enjoyed a day of fun and sport with special activities for children ranging from a jumping castle to face painting and an interactive sports dome. Feedback from the participants was very positive, with over half the teams expressing interest in possible future tournaments run by Hardout.
"We look forward to more activities in the future to have an impact on our community," Fa'ata'ape said.
