When Bonnie Beardsley, Ph.D., R.N., attended Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) leadership training this past summer, she could never have imagined the heights to which it would take her. As a result of her extensive background in nursing and education, Secretary of the Army Francis Harvey has appointed the Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) professor to serve on the United States Army Educational Advisory Committee.
In June, Beardsley participated in the ROTC leadership training in Fort Knox, Kentucky. A retired Army nurse, Beardsley welcomed the opportunity to put on fatigues and join other students in physical training ¿ including rock climbing, wall repelling, and river crossing. Other components of the training were discussions regarding the facilitation of leadership development on college campuses. Beardsley joined fellow educators from around the country and the course's designers in these sessions.
Toward the conclusion of the training, military leaders approached Beardsley as to her interest in serving on an advisory committee in Washington, D.C. Within a week, Beardsley was interviewed directly by Secretary Harvey for the position, and in September, Beardsley received written confirmation of her appointment from U.S. Army Deputy Chief of Staff Steven J. Van Straten LTC.
As a member of the ROTC Program Subcommittee, Beardsley will provide the secretary of the army, the chief of staff, and the Army's senior leadership with expert and continuous advice on their educational programs. Specifically, as the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's representative, she will assist in designing curriculum to bridge the gap between serving as a nurse in the military and as a civilian.
Beardsley says, "This appointment offers opportunities for me to illuminate a path and introduce a vision, walking side by side with the future nurses through turbulent times in our society."
Beardsley is a professor and the director of undergraduate and graduate nursing programs at ONU. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from ONU, a master's degree in nursing from Lewis University, and a Ph.D. in education from Walden University. Beardsley has more than 20 years of experience in nursing practice (both for the Army and as a civilian), administration, research, and education. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Frank Dilley Award for Outstanding Dissertation 2003, Who's Who Among American Teachers 2004 and 2005, Illinois League for Nursing Award for Outstanding Faculty Research 2002, and Outstanding Educator 2000.
