JESUS Film and Literacy Classes Drive Solomon Islands Outreach
At least 19 showings of the JESUS film have been scheduled during December in the Malaita Island area of the Solomon Islands. In a separate ministry, missionary Nancy Miller has established literacy training for women, an important means of reaching women in the islands.
Torn by two years of conflict that left 200 people dead, the Solomon Islands held general elections on December 5, the first since the conflict ended in an armed coup. A coalition government will be formed as a result of the elections, and Parliament will meet December 17 to elect a new prime minister.

Female District Superintendents

Last week, the International Weekly Summary reported that Nilda Calvo, new district superintendent of the Panama Central District, was only the second woman to serve in that capacity across the denomination. In fact, she is at least the fourth woman to serve as a Nazarene district superintendent.

The first female district superintendent was Elsie Wallace, appointed to the Northwest District in 1920 after E. J. Fleming resigned in midyear. Wallace was ordained an elder by Phineas Bresee in 1902. The second was Rosa Lee, who originally was appointed superintendent of the Leeward Virgin Islands District by then-General Superintendent Donald Owens and served from 1990 to 1999. Now in her 70s, Lee continues to pastor the Beacon Light Church of the Nazarene in St. John's, Antigua. Mary Lou Riggle, currently superintendent of the Costa Rica Central District, is the third woman to hold the office.

The editor thanks Ruth O. Saxon, retired missionary, Caribbean Nazarene Theological College, Trinidad, West Indies, for bringing the error to light and Nazarene archivist Stan Ingersol for additional research.

Nazarene Pastors Jailed in Creative Access Nation
Four Nazarene pastors from Korea have been jailed in an Asia-Pacific Region Creative Access Nation for conducting evangelistic activities. No further information is available at this time.

New District Superintendents Attend Orientation
District superintendents in the United States and Canada who were elected or appointed within the past year gathered in Kansas City December 4-5 for orientation sessions.

Sponsored by the Board of General Superintendents and the general secretary's office, the event included meetings with the Board of General Superintendents and Headquarters directors. Other sessions included interaction with veteran superintendents regarding district procedures and a visit to Nazarene Publishing House.

Attending the orientation were David E. Downs, Akron; Ray L. Doane, Anaheim; David M. Ralph, Colorado; Harold B. Graves Jr., Northeast Oklahoma; John H. Calhoun, Northern California; James R. Healy, Oregon Pacific; John L. Denney, Southern California; and D. Randy Berkner, Wisconsin.

Felter Elected Communications Services Director
David Felter has been elected to serve as the new Communications Services director, according to an announcement made today by Jack Stone, Headquarters operations officer/general secretary.

Following the approval of the nomination made to the General Board Executive Committee by Jack Stone and Paul G. Cunningham, responsible general superintendent, Felter was elected unanimously by the Board of General Superintendents. This new post was created by action of the General Board in February of 2001.

Communications Services is responsible for the oversight of NCN News, NCN Broadcast Services, and NCN Media Coordination. This service area is under the leadership of the Headquarters operations officer/general secretary and will begin functioning March 1, 2002.

David Felter has served in various ministry assignments at Headquarters since 1985. Felter began his ministry as a local church pastor, serving congregations in Iowa, California, Oklahoma, Indiana, and Kansas. He joined the Church Growth Division (now USA/Canada Mission/Evangelism) as education program manager and later served as Evangelism Ministries coordinator. In 1987 he was assigned to what is now Sunday School Ministries, where he served as Continuing Lay Training (CLT) coordinator. In 1998 he was elected as Adult Ministries director. Felter holds the B.A. degree from Oklahoma Wesleyan University, the M. A. degree from Southern Nazarene University, the M. S. degree from Indiana University (IU), and has completed all course work for the Ph.D. degree from IU. Felter has served the International Headquarters as producer of the Mid-Quadrennial Evangelism Conference, the Millennial Celebration, and the Gateway Missions Conference. He is the author of numerous CLT training guides and wrote In Search of Eden: Understanding New Age Thought, published by Beacon Hill Press. Earlier this year, Felter was elected as general editor for the denomination and will continue to act as editor in chief in addition to his new assignment as Communications Services director. He is married to Sandy, with whom he lives in Overland Park, Kansas. The Felters have two sons, David Ray and Jib, and five grandchildren.
